Reverse the Score
This is a a great tip if you have a tendency to tighten up on break points or when serving for the match. This is particularly helpful if you play on the ad side and have a tendency to miss returns on break points. Break points are chock-full with pressure. If you keep missing the return on break point, tell yourself it's the opponent's ad and not a break point. Your thought should be "it's their ad" instead of my ad. If you are able to convince yourself, this should relive the pressure. It takes practice so don't despair if it doesn't happen right away. This mental tip also works if you are serving for the match. Roberta Vinci convinced herself that she had already lost her serve against Serena Williams when she served up 5-4 in the third trying to stop Serena's historic Grand Slam bid in the semis of the 2015 US Open. Vinci managed to convince herself that she had already lost her serve and it was 5-5 and thus she had to hold her serve to stay ahead in the match. She was able to hold her serve at love using this mental strategy and produced one of the biggest upsets in the history of the game. If it worked for her and me, it can work for you. Above all remember tennis is a GAME and remember to have fun.
